Doomsday....sorry; you missed it.Since the concept of the Leap Year was first implemented back in 45BC, there have been about 514 of them.Without the extra day every 4 years, we would be in 2013.As the Mayan Calendar doesn't take leap years into account; 2012 has been and gone.(Edit - no: I'm not smart enough to work that out myself. I read it!)
Tropes Vs Women: Damsel in Distress Part 3Today marks the 3rd installment of Anita Sarkeesian's "Tropes vs Women in Gaming" series about the Damsel in Distress trope. This time the topic is about approaching the flip side of the coin, games where there is a female protagonist in charge, and why they either fail or aren't enough to combat the reoccurrence of the "kidnap princess" gameplay mechanic.Once again... what the hell is everyone getting so angry about? She has a very valid point, AND she goes into detail about both why ironic subversions aren't beneficial to an overall goal of equality, AND offers suggestions on how to make a damsel in distress game work where the damsel is the protagonist you play as and isn't a hyper sexualized character. All of this is basic gameplay creation 101 stuff, things anyone just starting to make games in the industry should be learning or trying to achieve, and the fact that more people AREN'T trying to fix things is part of the reason why Anita even needs to make videos like this in

DO YOU LIKE TO DRAW FANART?"What is FAN ART? Fan art is a statement saying: ' I LOVE YOU.' "Like to DRAW & SELL art of characters that you don't own on DeviantArt, et al?Know the IP laws and fan art laws. This is important to DA fan artists.
On Graduating-Hey guys, I know for a lot of you graduation is coming up super fast, and it seems completely absurd that it's been almost a year ago since I was in that boat. I well remember the two options presented to me:1) Get a studio job. Preferably close to home.2) Move back in with my parents. Possibly get a day job or something.I just wanted to remind ...whoever is reading this... that there are about a gazillion alternatives. In fact, any possible train of actions you can conceive of is an option. It's hard to think of options not presented to you as options, but you really can go anywhere and do anything. This is the only time in our lives when we don't have any greater obligations- we don't have a wife and kids to provide for, no company that would collapse without us, our bodies can handle sleeping on a springy old couch for a while. This is EXACTLY when you should take a gigantic risk because the only thing y
Turtles Production Shut DownVICTORY!http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/06/15/ninja-turtles-shut-downParamount has shut down pre-production on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot over "script problems".Translation; Paramount realised that if they continued down the path Bay was going, fans would probably burn their studios to the ground. With luck (and a dollop of common sense) the project will be shelved altogether and the IP left fallow until competent directors/producers are brought on board.I'm going to pretend my little campaign helped with this
TO THE ASPIRING ARTISTS OUT THERE....
I don't think I can delay getting myself a website...anymore.I've put it off for so long, and now we have an assignment where we must submit our online portfolio.I would love to hear of anyone's positive experiences. I have absolutely no idea where to start looking.
Illustration and Emotion according to Petar...In my never-ending crusade to prove to Deviantart users that 99% of them are illustrators and that it's a legitimate form of art, I thought I would share this cool article. The blog Muddy Colors is an excellent resource for any illustrator, professional or aspiring or hobbyist, and this is a particularly insightful entry from one of my favourite illustrators, Petar Meseldzija on the topic of making emotionally charged work. Scroll down to the bottom of the entry and this is part I of II so stay posted!http://muddycolors.blogspot.com/2011/11/illuxcon-4.htmlMy own commentary as it relates to deviantart: We can get a little short-sighted here. I've been thinking a lot about this recently because I've been looking at some of those "draw this again!" memes and, while it's really inspiring to see so much improvement in technique, there are very few entries which change anything about the drawing (the pose, the scenario, the background, the emotio
My Best Motivational TipWhen I become overcome with the guilt and shame and fear as a result of my constant procrastination, I have one trick to get me off my ass that works every time. Now, lots of other people and blogs and whatever are all like "look how lucky you are" and "puppies and rainbows" and "if you get it done now, you'll feel better" and lots of other positive shit. While all this stuff is true, I'm still playing Assassin's Creed II for like four hours a day. It doesn't motivate me at all. I still don't want to write a 500 word essay on the subtle differences between the book and the film adaptation of The Road that's due, like, tomorrow. So here's what I think of."Michael Bay wants me to fail."Insert your own celebrity arch nemesis if you want to, but basically choose someone so crap that it makes you angry. Preferably someone who's getting paid buckets of money to do whatever they do to piss you off.Competitive nature and the desire to prove your chosen asshole wrong should take over.
Random MusingsYou know what character I've always wanted to draw correctly but never could? Jasmine from Aladdin. No matter how many times I've tried, studying the character, the animation, etc... I just can't do it right. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. For that matter I wish I had a more disney-seque style of drawing. I think you can see some Mickey Mouse and Bone inspirations in my shorter cartoony characters like Spot or Talus... but when it comes to human beings I have a very hard time moving away from my Rumiko Takahashi roots. I really envy some of my fellow artists here on DA who have gorgeous linework and character designs, especially in the realm of the face. I've tried but, like Jasmine, I struggle. When I get Super Mario 3D Land for my 3DS, you can probably expect to see a lot of fanart of characters running around with Tanookie tails. I friggin' LOVED the leaf powerup in Super Mario Bros 3 and it's been damn close to 20 years since it's been in a new Mario game.I hate spoilers, but
