LAST ONE. Bwuh.

I adore Tangled for many reasons, but historical accuracy isn't one of them. It's actually the first Disney film that feels entirely set in its own fantasy world, with no real ties to any particular time period or setting- unless you count that ever-forgiving time period of "Ren Faire."

Since this is the last one in the series (so far as official princesses go), I thought I'd treat myself and just have fun with it. I drew up concepts for both the 16th century (the slashed sleeves) and 18th (Keane's initial inspiration), but in the interest of choosing a time period I hadn't touched yet I ended up going with the late Regency. There are a ton of gowns circa 1820 that have those inimitably princessy sleeves, and those palace guards aren't fooling anyone.

-Claire, who made a video for this but still needs to edit that nonsense together

In the commentary for Tangled, and in the Art of Tangled book, there's mention of it being heavily influenced by the 17th century.  I take that to mean that it's meant to have been set there.  The fact that Rapunzel shows up in Frozen just feels like another Disney Cameo, to me.  I doubt Hercules killed Scar, for instance.

I drew this long before Frozen!  I've never said (and never will say) that Rapunzel and Flynn's cameo is anything more than an easter egg. :)

They actually talk about being influences by the 18th century in the art book- the 1700's- since the early concepts were based heavily off of the work of Jean-Honoré Fragonard. :)

Oh! Tangled and Frozen are in the same time period, you can see Rapunzel
walking into the castle during coronation day.

That's actually just an Easter Egg! The creators of Frozen very specifically designed around a time period and location in a way the creators of Tangled most definitely did not. :)

I definitely love Rapunzel's design the best, although all of your historical princesses are amazing; I keep coming back to stare. Rapunzel's color scheme seems to match the style of the added details in the clothing and the lighting of the lantern very well. Perhaps the lighting itself is why I like this picture most; it gives the image a more solid, present feel, despite their being no background, and that relaxes the eye. Instead of floating in a void, she seems grounded.
