Description

…Yes. Yes it is.

It's inexplicably mid-July all over again, which means it’s time for San Diego Comic-Con International!  I’m not tabling, but I am on four panels this year in some feeble attempt to spend as little time on the exhibition floor as is possible.  I’ll also be dressed as Asha/Yara Greyjoy on Saturday, because what is SDCC without sweating through several layers of waxed linen.  Here’s my schedule, if you want to track me down:

  • Female Heroes, Then and Now
    Thursday, July 24 | 1:00pm - 2:00pm | Room 32AB
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Heartbreakers, a groundbreaking science fiction series that was one of the first action comics starring female heroes, and the only one written by a woman when it debuted in Dark Horse Presents. Today, there are more women than ever reading and creating comics-not to mention cosplaying and writing about comics-but it seems a lot of the old biases are still entrenched. What’s changed in 25 years, and what hasn’t? Join Heartbreakers creators Anina Bennett andPaul Guinan, along with friends Jimmy Palmiotti (Painkiller Jane), Kiala Kazebee (Vaginal Fantasy), Allison Baker (Monkeybrain Comics), and Claire Hummel (Bioshock: Infinite), for a lively discussion of sexism, science fiction, comic books, and geek culture.
  • How to Be a Nerd For a Living: Career Paths Within Nerd Culture
    Friday, July 25 | 11:00am - 12:00pm | Room 4
Want to work in a fandom-related industry you’re passionate about, but not sure where to start? These professional “Nerds for a Living” will discuss careers within gaming, film, comics, illustration and more. Lee Joyner (director of admissions, Cinema Makeup School), Tom Kurzanski (art director, TeeFury), Claire Hummel (production designer, HBO; concept artist, BioShock Infinite), Karen Hallion (artist and illustrator), Brad Herman (lead product designer, DreamWorks Animation), and Pat Loika (Comixology, Loikamania Podcast) will share their career-building experiences. Topics include training, online resources, networking, and tactics to use (and avoid) for breaking into your dream industry. Moderated by Wendy Buske (marketing director, Nerd For A Living). This panel will conclude with an audience Q&A.

  • Is It Steampunk?
    Friday, July 25 | 12:00pm - 1:00pm | Room 29A
You’ve heard of Steampunk, but what exactly distinguishes this unique subgenre from other branches of science fiction?Andrew Fogel(The League of S.T.E.A.M.), Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett (Boilerplate, Frank Reade), Claire Hummel (Bioshock: Infinite), and Thomas Willeford (The Steampunk Adventurer’s Guide) dissect and debate pop culture examples of literature, movies, TV, video games, comics, and more in a rapid-fire showdown that will push boundaries and defy expectations in a quest to finally answer the question, “Is it Steampunk?”
  • The Witty Women of Steampunk
    Friday, July 25 • 2:30pm - 3:30pm | Room 24ABC
While the Victorian era was known for its constraints on morals, behaviors and bosoms, Steampunks have turned things on their head by reimagining a history that never was. Women creators have loosened those traditional corset laces and have begun to explore multiculturalism, science, sexuality, class politics, and much more. Panelists explore just how liberating the age of steam can be, featuring witty women Anina Bennett (Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel), Ay-leen the Peacemaker (editor for BeyondVictoriana.com and Tor Books),Claire Hummel (Bioshock: Infinite), Robin Blackburn (The League of S.T.E.A.M.), Sarah Hunter(Steampunk model/performer), Sheyne Fleischer ( The League of S.T.E.A.M.), and moderator Dina Kampmeyer (Lady Steam Designs).

Can’t wait to see some of you guys there! :D
