It's not my style by shoomlah It's not my style by shoomlah
I've been crazy excited to do Tiana- she's not my favourite princess, but I started researching her dress in the very early stages of this project and got pretty hyped up about it.

Most of the dresses in Princess and the Frog do have some historical basis (lots of dropped waists and slinky chemises), so I thought it would be fun to tackle Tiana's magic-kiss-swamp-frog-something gown during the climax of the film. It's the one dress that's clearly meant to just be a standalone "princess" dress, but I liked the idea of a challenge and decided to drag it kicking and screaming back into the 20's.

I based the dress on Lanvin's robes de style, which were- unlike the flapper dresses most people associate with the Jazz Age- fitted in the bodice with a wide, panniered skirt. The robe de style was considered a relatively conservative dress choice so you probably wouldn't have seen a hem hiked up this high, but COME ON HOW OFTEN DO I GET TO DRAW THEIR LEGS. Not often enough, I'll tell you that.

I did an assignment on the Charleston a few months ago, and I know I've seen those shoes and that hairstyle somewhere before. grin wink Again I love the accuracy and detail.

This is so vibrant, colorful and vivid, I love it! You can almost hear a jazz tune playing in the background, and the dress it's a thing of beauty.
Beautifully done. Looking up to more of your work. :)

You did a great job with the dress, but the fireflies around her REALLY make the mood for the picture.  I can somehow almost feel the warmth and wetness of the swamp she's dancing it. (Or maybe it's just the bleach from cleaning my BR seconds ago.) Anyway, awesome work!

Totally dapper! Love it! Now that you mention it, I hadn't really thought about it, but her dress at the end DOESN'T fit in with the rest of the movie.......... Though her dress at the end is a wedding dress. I don't think this is what a 20's wedding dress would look like, but it is still pretty awesome! It is a fun age, the 20's! You got it down for sure! This one, if I were doing this series, would have been the most fun to research and draw!

this dress thrills me endlessly. you wanted 20's you GOT 20's and then some! i just love how the dress got turned into...this! the flapper cut bodice that crosses over, the GLOVES. and the lily pad on the hip is adorable! quite pleased you remember the pearls around the neck, and the head piece...XD oh yeah. though i kind of wish you had included maybe one or two water lilies. like maybe on the shoes, or on the head piece.

i quite honestly wonder what people would have said if a woman walked down the street in this dress in the 20's. XD

I really adore the movement of this one. Her legs are so fun and you can practically feel the movement of her dress while swing music plays in the background.
Fantastic work incorporating the lily pad and whatnot too. Simply fabulous!

Thank you for pulling Tiana's "princess" dress kicking and screaming into the 1920's! That dress is the inly thing I don't like about that movie! (I love Deco-era fashion!)

Tiana is my favorite princess, and this is one of my favorite portraits of yours.

Gotta admit to not necessarily liking the 1920's design of the "standalone 'princess' dress," but like you said... historical accuracy, drag it kicking and screaming back into the 20's, and all that Jazz. xD

Although, I love this portrait for a wide variety of other reasons. Love the pure joy on Tiana's face as she dances. Love the design of the dress itself (even if it's not my favorite style). Love the attention to detail (especially the lilypad; thought that was a nice touch). Love the fireflies. And OMG LOVE the colors!! Sweet Heaven Above, I absolutely love the rich, deep, colors and textures of Tiana's hair, skin and dress. LOVE the contrast between her dark chocolate skin and the deep, rich green of the lilypad dress. (In fact, most marketing and fan portraits of Tiana seem to give her lighter skin. =( ) Everything about it is just wonderful.
