Bioshock: Infinite - the Lutece twins by shoomlah Bioshock: Infinite - the Lutece twins by shoomlah
My pride and joy, the Lutece twins! After finishing up my work for Elizabeth, Irrational hit me up to take a pass at these lovable rapscallions, the scientific minds behind the technology of Columbia. They play a surprisingly huge role in the game, so I've been really flattered to see how many fans they've accumulated over the past couple of months. Granted, let's be honest, most of that is probably because of the amazing writing in the game, but I'LL TAKE WHAT I CAN GET.

I hope everyone realizes that these two are meant to look like they just walked straight out of Leyendecker illustrations,

Are you the one who actually worked on the characters? This... This is pure perfection. Wonderful work.

I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS SO MUCH, but you know I thought they looked familiar somehow, and now that you mention Leyendecker (and now that I looked up who he was and his stuff), YES THEY ARE TOTALLY LEYENDECKER COME TO LIFE!!!! <3

That was one intense ending, dear. I adored these two, so mysterious, so intelligent, so...odd.
Beautiful overall!

Aren't you the one who created these two? .... If so, you did a fantastic job. I love these two so much! Especially after getting the game (Which I'm still in the middle of.)

Just finished the game recently, myself. As someone who loved all the detail put into absolutely every facet of its creation, may I say how awesome it is to run into the person responsible for such memorable characters' designs!

Just wanted to say I really love your designs!! I would see cosplays of these two and really wanted to do one myself, but never looked into where they were from. Over spring break my friend introduced me to the game and we all played it together and loved it. I'm hoping to cosplay Rosalind sometime soon aaaa. <3

My absolute favorites!!!!!
blackkiteekat Featured By Owner Feb 4, 2014
I do so love Rosalind's default expression. It conveys the kind of certainty that would be called arrogance if she were ever wrong (but she's Rosalind Lutece, so being incorrect is kind of a non-issue).

I adore the Lutece twins. I'm a student director and I know for sure that one day they'll secretly appear in one of
my movies or at least I'll refer to them. They are the characters I love the most in Bioshock Infinite. :3

Sometimes I just come back to your bioshock concepts after not having seen them in a while because they make me so happy! It also reminds me how much I love your artwork. If you don't mind my asking - and if you have time - what was your path to become a concept artist? I'm trying to head in that direction myself. :)

I was never quite sure about Miss. Lutece and her tie. On the one hand it does seem like her to wear something button-down and formal like that, but on the other not wearing one would make her, the female-version of the twins, that much more feminine.

What was your thinking?
shoomlah Featured By Owner Sep 12, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
I'm not sure what you're saying- what about wearing a tie makes her "un-feminine", and what makes a tie "formal"? What they're wearing is actually daywear, so it's much more on the casual/sportswear end of the Edwardian fashion spectrum.  THere are numerous examples of women in ties during the period, it's actually a pretty common accessory:…

starshinecruzer Featured By Owner Sep 13, 2013
Very good point. Her styles are very much in step with the burgeoning fashion movements of the time. I suppose I was thinking more in terms of the alternate outfit pictured here,….

However considering the design objective was to emphasize how the twins are basically the same person yet from different dimensions, choosing a collar/tie combination they could both sport makes much more sense. I was coming at it from the opposite perspective, that even though the look/think alike their differences should be emphasized, and that defeats the purpose of the "exercise", and Miss. Lutece might say. :)

'You missed' '4 out of 5?' 'we can do this all day; can you?'

love these two and the music for them. Great work.

I have to thank you for mentioning Leyendecker. I didn't know about this artist and turns out its a style I love!
So thank you so much.

Something about her reminds me of Captain Jane Way. Maybe its the scientific mind and femininity together or maybe it's the hair. I just know I love both characters :)

All the kudos! All of them! I great how much thought went into their design and it definitely shows; they are very memorable, not just because of their personalities and talents, but also visually. :+fav:

These two made the game for me. Being an amateur historic tailor and a huge fan of Leyendecker, Mucha, and Gibson, these two really honed in the period and their appearence lovingly captured the somewhat playful and cheerfully decorated Edwardian era. There was so much structure in Edwardian fashion, but without being as gloomy or serious as the Victorian era before it. Gah, I love this!
Anyway, these two captured that feeling a lot better than Elizabeth's jug-tastic Lady Comstock gown and short hair at the end of the game.

weridly the concept looks as though, they were supposed to be somehow strange and yet likable at the same time, after all they are ment to be your friends

thelexhex Featured By Owner Jun 24, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Your work on these character designs is great; you kept them simple, which is really part of their charm, I think. The Lutece "twins" are just SO unassuming, which makes their oddness and importance that much cooler. I mean, for me, anyway. Idk about other folks.

Nevertheless, I love these two, and I love your work on them. Cheers!

man it's so cool to actually see the person who designed a character from that game.Amazing!
So did you only do the lutece's & young Elizabeth?
And your job on the game would be called what exactly?

Holy shit, you DESIGNED them? You know I have a crush on them (lol XD) right? They're my favorite characters from the game, AWESOME work! <333
Thieftier Featured By Owner May 26, 2013
About how old are they supposed to be? I've seen guesses everywhere from early twenties to late thirties.
normalguycap Featured By Owner May 24, 2013
You're work is great, but I hate these characters. Especially Rosalind. She's so arrogant and pretentious and the entire game is her fault! Just because she basically wanted to bone her male version.
shoomlah Featured By Owner May 24, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
I... I think you might have missed the point of the game.
normalguycap Featured By Owner May 26, 2013
It seems you did not understand what I said. In what way was I wrong? In what way did I miss the point of the game? I played through it 3 times and have analyzed it thoroughly.

I don't like Rosalind as a character no matter how the plot went. Her snotty holier-than-thou tone was grating. And her attraction to her male-self bordered on masturbatory.
shoomlah Featured By Owner May 26, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
As someone who worked on the game, Rosalind's attraction to her male self is entirely on your end- not on ours.
normalguycap Featured By Owner May 27, 2013
Mmhmm, sure thing. You realize how many plot holes filled the game, right? How the internal logic is broken? How nothing at the beginning mattered at all in the second half? How technically everything that happened was the Lutece's (Lettuce's) fault? Because she wanted to be with her 'brother' they ended up screwing up everything leading to the events of the game?

I'm sure her sex drive is nonexistent, but the tone, her actions, their touches, her voxophones concerning Robert, make the relationship very creepy. Ah well, it's just her arrogance that offends me. She's kind of a jerk.
Hakuisthebest Featured By Owner May 28, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
By the way (sorry for the double comment, lol), you realize her "brother" is the ONLY person in the game she can trust, right? I know she's kinda arrogant and kind of a jerk, but I'm pretty sure she had no one else to turn to besides Robert. I don't blame her for wanting to be with Robert, I would too. But yeah, Robert is, generally, more selfless and likeable than Rosalind - I still like them both equally though. Also, if you analyze famous (and fantastic) plots in movies/games you'll see how filled with plot holes they are, like Inception, Fight Club and I'm sure a lot more others. Hell, even Harry Potter and LOTR have plot holes, it's next to impossible not to have plot holes. Plot holes don't make Bioshock Infinite be less good, though, it's still a FANTASTIC game in my opinion.
I don't know how Rosalind would be, face-to-face, with other people, though - she's arrogant with Lady Comstock because Lady Comstock hated her for something she didn't do, but she isn't arrogant with Booker, at least I didn't see that. She was enigmatic, and, to be honest, funny, when it came to Booker. And even though they screwed up, they DID try to fix it WAY more than a dozen times (even though who wanted to fix it was Robert, not Rosalind, but what the hell) Relationships with other people are pratically nonexistant (like I said, Robert is the only person she KNOWS), so I really can't say how she'd interact with others.
But I really don't see how the beggining of the game didn't matter.
Hakuisthebest Featured By Owner May 28, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
That's exactly why I love her <3
